Christian women are often told to respect their husbands even when their husbands are acting in unrespectable ways. This corresponds with Paul’s advice to couples: “Each one of you (the husbands) also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband” (Ephesians 5:33).

The difficulty is figuring out how to do that in a way that does not enable irresponsibility and prevent a woman from taking care of herself, speaking her truth, and setting boundaries.
